About the project

The project „Preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence“ aims at enhancement the professional knowledge and skills of the Judiciary, law enforcement and administration to handle domestic and gender-based violence cases as well as at improving the framework for institutional interaction and coordination.

The project activities are consistent with the Justice Programme’s objective for strengthening the rule of law and contribute to the achievement of the Programme’s outcome for ensuring the improved capacity of Bulgarian authorities in the DGBV-area.

Start date – 12 February 2020

Period of implementation – 48 months

Funding – Justice Program of the Norwegian Financial Mechanism 2014-2021

Budget – 250 000 EUR

The project institutional partner is the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Bulgaria.

The main target groups are legal and other professionals working in the field of justice (magistrates, candidates for junior magistrates, court staff, assessors, lawyers, etc.), law enforcement officials, experts to Bulgarian authorities in charge of preventing and combating DGBV.

Specific project outcomes:

  • Enhanced competence of Bulgarian magistrates and other experts involved in the field under consideration and improved interaction between the Judiciary and the competent authorities, ensuring a more effective prevention and counteraction to domestic and gender-based violence;
  • Assessment of the pilot local cooperation mechanism in the field of violence against women and domestic violence, established under pre-defined project No 9, aimed at building up an effective and efficient mechanism for interinstitutional cooperation in this field.
